Companies looking to keep to a strict budget may want to consider virtual software, it has been suggested.
Rick Harrison, director for the city of Columbia, noted he opted for virtualisation in a bid to save thousands of IT man hours across a year, Computerworld reports.
The industry figure observed: "We knew we weren't going to get more staff, so we had to find a way to make our current technicians more efficient."
Implementing virtual platforms enabled the organisation to make better use of staff members' time and take away the drudge work from them, he explained.
Mr Harrison added the technology was chosen to automate software distribution, help desk functions and improve configuration management.
Research recently carried out by independent company Aberdeen found storage virtualisation can bring numerous benefits to an enterprise.
The key advantage was reduction in the complexity of the datacentre, the study found, but it also allows disparate storage capacity to be managed as part of a whole.
