Virtualisation drives efficient IT ‘from all angles’

Virtualisation is helping promote effective computing through a number of different channels, it has been suggested.

Gartner said virtual software will be the highest-impact issue challenging infrastructure and operations through 2015.

The company claimed more than 80 per cent of enterprises currently have a virtualisation programme or project in mind.

Philip Dawson, research vice-president at Gartner, noted the technology will have an impact on how firms manage how and what they buy, how they deploy software and the way they plan their processes.

He observed: "Virtualisation now drives efficient IT from all angles, including data centre design, platform updates and application and infrastructure modernisation, as well as traditional and new delivery models."

Server virtualisation is the next big challenge for the sector, Mr Dawson added.

A recent survey carried out by SpiceWorks - which included more than 3,000 industry figures from 117 countries - found virtualisation is helping to push increased IT spending among small and medium-sized enterprises.
