Strong server shipments and revenue growth in the second quarter of 2010 has been driven by virtualisation, it has been suggested.
A report from Gartner found a total of 2.1 million severs were shipped in this period, CRN.com reports.
It marks a 27.1 per cent increase over that recorded a year earlier - when 1.7 million servers were dispatched.
Total factory revenue from these sales came to $11.1 billion (£7.1 billion), which was up 14.3 per cent from 2009.
Research vice-president at Gartner Jeffrey Hewitt claimed an improving economic climate, pent-up demand and the strength of service providers were all factors in the growth.
The industry figure commented: "I have a hypothesis, and it's a hypothesis only, that adoption of virtualization drives server purchases."
In a recent contribution for Knowledge Center, Mark Settle observed his company was able to recoup the outlay it spent on virtualisation in less than six months as the technology helped reduce power consumption and data centre floor space.
