The benefits for a company that adopts virtualisation are plentiful, an industry expert has claimed.

Reporting for Investor’s Business Daily, J Bonasia noted a switch to virtual software, such as Citrix XenServer, can make larger systems more flexible.

The specialist observed the concept of virtualisation is simple - it divides a system running a single business application into several virtual machines that each run software in parallel.

According to the sector commentator: "The approach cuts costs, reducing the amount of hardware, space and energy needed to power up large datacentres."

The technology can "squeeze more work" out of every computer, while maintenance is made simpler because there is less requirement for tech support in managing hardware and software, the writer added.

Heather Clancy recently observed on ZDNet virtualisation can boost a firm’s green credentials, as Wells Fargo was able to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions after implementing the technology last year.
