Virtualisation ‘has changed the face of the data centre’

Virtualisation has played its part in altering the very face of today's data centre, it has been suggested.

Writing for Processor, Chris MacKinnon claimed there "is no doubt" this is the case, as the benefits companies receive when implementing virtual software - such as Citrix XenServer - are plentiful.

The expert noted: "Virtualisation means less hardware, less money and increased IT efficiency."

Such advantages are starting to be seen in other areas of the data centre as well, he added.

Mr MacKinnon explained much is known about the success of server virtualisation, but storage virtualisation is now becoming more widely adopted as well.

This trend is especially positive news for small and medium-sized enterprises who are experiencing data growth, he added.

In a recent article for Information Week, George Crump advised companies considering storage virtualisation to think about the scope of their project's needs before making such a switch, as this will make the transition easier.
