Virtualisation technology is beginning to have a significant impact on handheld devices, it has been suggested.
Writing for PC World, Agam Shah noted the technology has already been widely employed in data centres and has helped slash energy costs and reduce server numbers.
The journalist observed Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at Linley Group, said at the Linley Tech Processor conference in California that virtualisation can help consolidate applications on mobile devices without wasting resources.
And the reporter claimed this practice could soon be seen on smartphones by "helping run critical tasks in real-time and securing disparate software environments".
Customers may be able to put to use these new advancements on next-generation mobile devices as early as next year, the writer added.
Sourcingfocus.com recently identified the areas of efficiency gains and cost reduction as the two to benefit most from the implementation of virtual software, as the technology enables firms to better predict shifting customer patterns.
