Virtualisation has now become a cornerstone of any serious IT strategy, it has been suggested.
Writing for the Star Advertiser, John Agsalud said the high attendance at the VMWare conference in San Francisco - where 17,000 people were present - is proof of the growing popularity of the software.
The expert noted virtualisation has progressed significantly since the 1960s, but observed the basic principle is the same: "Use your hardware more efficiently."
He explained: "Virtualisation technologies allow you to have multiple versions of Windows running on one physical machine, thereby using the idle time and kicking up utilisation rates."
Virtualisation is not limited to Windows-based servers or technology from VMWare, Mr Agsalud remarked, but added this is the most popular implementation type in use today.
A recent study carried out by SpiceWorks discovered outlay on virtual platforms is helping drive the increased IT spending witnessed among small and medium-sized enterprises.
