Virtualisation can bring many benefits, including cost-saving measures, it has been suggested.
Writing for ReadWriteWeb, Audrey Watters noted virtual software - such as Citrix XenDesktop - might be of particular benefit for students and universities.
The expert claimed eliminating the computer lab can bring substantial cost savings.
Eric Sills, assistant vice-provost at North Carolina State University, observed his institute saved $500,000 (£322,000) by closing down half of its computer centres.
And virtualised computer labs would also prove advantageous for pupils, who will have access to the technology whenever they want - meaning the software fits well with their IT and learning needs, Ms Watters explained.
She added: "And for a bonus, no one fusses if you bring food and drink to the virtualised computer lab."
Paul Venezia, reporting recently for PC World, noted virtualisation can significantly improve computing environments of any size, especially in regards to driving down operational costs.
