Virtualisation ‘saves money and offers mobility’

Virtualisation can enable organisations to become more mobile and increasingly cost-effective, it has been suggested.

Writing for Government Technology, Karen Wilkinson described how Denton in Texas was able to reduce spending on IT expenses by adopting virtual software.

The city - with a population of around 120,000 - was struggling to handle managing more than 100 physical servers and had 1,200 employees working on laptops or desktops of different makes, the reporter noted.

Paul Desjarns, systems architect for the city, claimed money-saving was another key driver in adopting virtual platforms.

The industry figure observed the switch has been particularly beneficial to workers.

“There are so many situations where they can use the desktop and the remote connectivity that we think improves productivity significantly. It’s just really versatile,” he added.

Research recently carried out by Aberdeen found storage virtualisation can bring numerous advantages to a company, especially the idea datacentre complexity can be minimised through the technology.
