Virtualisation server replacement cycles ‘saving firms money’

Companies that invest in virtual technology will reap the financial rewards over the long-term, it has been suggested.

Darin Stahl, a server industry analyst at Info-Tech Research Group, noted firms are being able to trim their budgets because of the shorter server replacement cycles that accompany virtualisation, ComputerWorld reports.

The expert observed the server replenishments that are encouraged through virtual platforms, such as Citrix XenDesktop, can save businesses cash by allowing them to purchase a few virtualised machines to replace larger boxes of greater number.

"Right now, the practice in most production shops is getting a seven-to-one [consolidation] ratio, so instead of refreshing seven servers, they’re refreshing one and getting rid of six physical servers," he explained.

Writing for Datamation, Rick Vanover recently claimed virtualisation is becoming increasingly popular among small and medium-sized enterprises as they can attain the software, which can better their volume-management procedures without over-stretching their budgets.
