VMware is a popular option for companies looking to move to a virtual environment, it has been suggested.

Allatsea.net's Dustin Norland noted the technology is highly regarded as it produces a complete tool set for virtualisation.

The expert explained the premise as "running a computer within a computer" and noted virtualisation platforms allow firms to control numerous operating systems within one instance.

He claimed the benefits of virtual software are numerous, but stated the most obvious advantage is "allowing users to run multiple operating systems at a single time without the need for multiple physical computers".

The need to reboot constantly is also alleviated, Mr Norlund observed.

He added any upgrade would see all previously-installed software remain as it was.

In a recent article for Government Technology, Karen Wilkinson noted utilising virtual applications can enable an organisation to become more mobile and increasingly cost-effective, as it reduces spending on IT expenses.
