VMware and Citrix ‘upped the ante in virtualisation last year’

VMware and Citrix led the drive for increased take-up of virtualisation throughout 2009, one industry commentator has claimed.

Writing for InfoWorld, David Marshall stated that these companies "made things extremely interesting" for the sector.

He noted that as competition between the major players heated up, innovative new features and functions became frequent, with much benefit to the consumer.

Mr Marshall remarked that the organisations "released feature-rich virtualisation platforms that would make anyone proud".

According to the expert, VMware‘s vSphere 4 was at the core of these offerings, with its ability to deliver more powerful virtual machines based on an increase in supported virtual processors.

Looking ahead to 2010, he added that it could be a "huge year" for the market based on the foundations of a successful 2009.

Last month, executive vice-president of Patni Computer Systems Satish Joshi said that desktop virtualisation, in particular, will grow in popularity, in 2010, Rediff Business reported.ADNFCR-2732-ID-19549474-ADNFCR
