VMware’s new ThinApp 4.5 application virtualisation solution is designed to drastically improve migration times for existing programs across a number of Microsoft operating systems.

According to the company, using the technology to upgrade to Windows 7 can be up to 40 per cent faster than previous methods.

Vice-president and general manager of the organisation’s desktop business unit Jocelyn Goldfein said enhancing older infrastructures is vital for firms to stay competitive.

"Upgrading to Windows 7 is a strategic imperative for enterprises that carries a significant operational and cost barrier," she said. "Application virtualisation via ThinApp is a proven solution to help enterprises address this challenge."

Ms Goldfein added that deploying, coding, migrating and testing tens of years’ worth of applications can often be a daunting task, particularly when corporations are attempting to do so without interrupting their business operations.

VMware claims that the product will also aid workforce mobility, with users able to access important files from a number of different devices without additional software or drivers.
