Integrating VMWare virtualisation solutions can significantly increase the effectiveness of IT departments, it has been suggested.

According to eChannelLine, a survey of small to medium-sized enterprises - conducted by VMWare - has shown that virtualisation can bring about a wide range of benefits, with more than 70 per cent reporting reduced time spent on routine administrative tasks.

Furthermore, seven-out-of-ten firms that have introduced virtualisation stated their IT departments are somewhat or very effective, compared to 45 per cent among those that have failed to adopt the solutions.

Joe Andrews of VMWare observed that all kinds of companies can be improved by virtualisation.

"Whether it’s time freed up to respond to new business challenges, reduced hardware costs … or more satisfied end users, these results show that the benefits are significant across the board," he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Tony Shapshak of Times Live has predicted that virtualisation will become increasingly popular in 2010, with VMWare and Citrix expected to have a good year.
