Home working is an attractive option to many people, including both employers and staff, as it offers a range of benefits.
It could be set for a further rise in popularity over the coming years if the latest predictions for mobile phone usage are to be believed.
According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), some 1.3 billion people around the world will be using a mobile to carry out at least part of their job by 2015.
"Despite recent market turmoil, mobility continues to be a critical part of the global workforce and we expect to see healthy growth in the number of mobile workers," explained Stacy Crook, senior research analyst for IDC's Mobile Enterprise Research programme.
Increased use of handsets could make home working a more feasible option than ever for millions of British staff, as they are able to keep in touch with their office via the devices.
Shirley Borrett, development director at the Telework Association, recently said younger employees are increasingly looking for flexible working options in any job package.
