Flexible working could be utilised by companies to prevent absenteeism during the World Cup, it has been suggested.

Stephen Riley, director at recruitment company IntaPeople, said the tournament could present the ideal opportunity for firms to introduce remote access employment, ExecDigital reports.

The industry expert noted the practice, which can be made possible through such software as Citrix Access Gateway, can be beneficial for both bosses and staff members alike.

He explained that as a company, "you don’t have to worry about key workers calling in sick at the last minute, while as an employee, you are likely to remember that you’ve been treated well".

A number of businesses are already reaping the rewards of taking such a stance during the competition in South Africa, the specialist added.

Researchers at Brigham Young University in Utah recently compiled a report that focused on 25,000 members of staff at IBM and found a flexible working approach can result in significantly increased productivity.
